Introduction

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in which a blood clot forms USUALLY in the deep veins of the leg, groin or arm (known as deep vein thrombosis, DVT) and travels in the circulation, lodging in the lungs (known as pulmonary embolism, PE). Together, DVT and PE are known as VTE - a dangerous, potentially deadly medical condition.

The MHH DVT system including the DVT Pump and the sleeves is an sequential compression device (SCD) system, as an external pneumatic compression (EPC) system for the prevention of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). Muscles are rendered ineffective as an assist in venous return during surgery. The MHH DVT pump functions as a secondary pump to propel venous blood out of the deep veins while a patient is undergoing surgical procedures.

The MHH DVT pump produces automatically timed cycles of compressed air. This compressed air forces blood out of the deep veins, helping to prevent slowed or stopped blood flow. Bursts of air are delivered to the specially designed sleeves wrapped around extremities. This air helps to move blood out of the deep veins and reduce the risk of developing DVT. Sleeves are lined with tricot fabric to help reduce heat and perspiration.

Function

The inflating and deflating movement of the IPC device supports the blood circulation. Healthy movement of blood in body prevents blood clots from forming. When the sleeves compress, it helps the blood move through body to heart. When they relax, oxygen-rich blood flows to leg arteries. The sleeves also help body release substances that can prevent clots.
